The Goal of Bio-FlexCLC:
… is to establish an efficient, and scalable process to convert low-value biogenic residues and organic waste to heat and power with negative or zero emission through CLC-CFB coupled with gas cleaning and CO2 liquefaction.
This facility will utilize biogenic residues and wastes, achieve negative CO2 emissions, reduce SOx and NOx emissions, enhance CO2 capture efficiency at a considerably reduced cost, have flexibility towards load fluctuations, and the capacity to switch to conventional Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) combustion if market conditions are not amiable for carbon capture.

The specific main objectives of the project are:
- To demonstrate Bio-FlexCLC at MW-scale with downstream treatment and liquefaction.
- To further the understanding of CLC of biogenic residues
- To improve the conversion of fuel by laboratory experiments and modelling
- To reduce SOx, NOx, aromatics, and particle emissions
- To evaluate the flexibility of switching CLC to CFB boiler
- To design a commercial scale CLC-CFB boiler for Bio-FlexCLC operation at an industrial scale
- To evaluate the flexibility of Bio-FlexCLC operation with changing thermal input load
- To evaluate the flexibility of CLC operation with heat-to-power ratio
To evaluate social and economic barriers to adopting Bio-FlexCLC in the regions in transition from fossil fuels
