Bio-FlexCLC at ICCL2026

The Bio-FlexCLC project was represented at the 8th International Conference on Chemical Looping (ICCL2026), held at the University of Manchester from 31 August to 4 September 2026. The conference brought together more than 160 participants from the international chemical looping community to exchange the latest developments in materials, reactors, process design, scale-up and industrial applications.

Bio-FlexCLC contributed to the scientific programme with several presentations and posters, showcasing the project’s work on flexible chemical looping combustion for combined heat and power (CHP) production from biogenic residues and wastes, with the potential for negative CO₂ emissions.

The project was represented through a Bio-FlexCLC poster presented by Simona Scoppa, providing an overview of the project’s objectives, approach and technological concept and more specific poster by Emil Hed

The scientific programme also featured a presentation by Amirhosein Filsou, entitled “Flexible CFB-CLC operation strategy for biofuels combustion with negative CO₂ emission” and of Chalmers University with “Conversion Enhancement in a 10 kWth Chemical-Looping Combustion Unit: Effect of Random Metal Packings“. The contribution addressed the operational strategy of the flexible CFB-CLC concept and its potential to combine biofuel combustion with carbon capture and negative emissions.

Together, these contributions illustrated different aspects of the Bio-FlexCLC approach, from the overall project concept and CHP application to the operational strategies required for flexible chemical looping combustion.

From Idea to Commercialisation on 4th September

Bio-FlexCLC was also part of the Horizon Europe workshop “From Idea to Commercialization with Horizon Europe Projects”, organised together with the COUPLED and Bio-MeGaFuel projects.

During the workshop, Garcia and Jochen presented “From material discovery to demonstration scale”, highlighting the pathway from research and material development towards larger-scale technology demonstration. Presentation HERE

The workshop provided an opportunity to look beyond individual research results and discuss how innovations developed within Horizon Europe projects can progress through different stages of technological development and ultimately move closer to industrial application. The session also brought together perspectives on technology development, scale-up, market context and the challenges involved in moving from research to deployment.

ICCL2026 provided an important platform for Bio-FlexCLC to present its latest work to researchers, technology developers and other stakeholders active in the chemical looping community.

The participation of Bio-FlexCLC across scientific presentations, posters and the Horizon Europe commercialisation workshop reflected the project’s ambition to connect fundamental research, flexible operation, technological development and future demonstration, supporting the development of more flexible and sustainable solutions for CHP production from biogenic residues and wastes.

The project continues to work towards demonstrating how chemical looping can contribute to flexible CHP generation while enabling cost-effective CO₂ capture and the potential for negative emissions.
